Engineer Wanted

Come build something that inspires people to adventure.

We have big ambitions

Wayward helps people share the stories of their adventures live. This sharing inspires others to get out into the world. Since we’ve launched, Wayward has been used in over 51 countries to track everything from van lifers to kayaking trips.

We’re building software that’s going to upset the biggest players in Outdoor marketing and adventure tracking. Come join our core team as our technical Leader.

Where it is

Wayward is a mobile app (Android and iOS) for individual travelers and a web portal for organizers. Some aspects of it work pretty smooth. Many aspects have bugs and we have a massive backlog of features.

Where it’s going (with your help)

Wayward will be the go-to app for adventurers and organizers of adventure. It’ll be used by anybody looking to share their trip with just a few friends or broadcast it to the world.

Characteristics you must have

You’re motivated by solving hard technical problems

We’re trying to build an app that allows people to share their adventure routes and stories, while they’re offline in the wilderness, without additional hardware. There will be photo sharing, video sharing, and route animations. We need it to conform to GDPR and it’ll be used in every country and ocean on the planet.

PASSION

You must be deeply passionate about travel, the outdoors, and adventure of all sorts. Sailing, camping, biking, off-roading, van life-ing, motorcycling, paddling, etc…. If you spend your weekends getting out into the world, you’re among friends. We also expect that you’ll be testing Wayward constantly and you can’t do that if you don’t enjoy getting lost once in a while.

Customer-Centered

We have high expectations for ourselves and you should as well. We need you to produce thoughtful design that anticipates how humans use software in the real world. We expect releases to be thoroughly tested and your code should account for when users don’t use it as intended. If none of this is a surprise to you, this role might be for you.

self-motivated

We are a small team and we’re moving fast. You should be able to recognize problems that need to be solved and to proactively solve them. If you’re somebody that likes to “work as directed” this role isn’t the right fit at this time. We expect you to be the expert of your domain and to be constantly learning.

The role

  • Complete ownership over our iOS App, Android App, and Web App.

  • Design, build, and implement new services and features within the full stack

  • Work at all layers of the stack, from AWS/Laravel/SQL to React/HTML/CSS

  • Take end to end ownership and responsibility for architecture, deployment, and maintenance of product features

  • Collaborate with the entire company to refine requirements to deliver the best product to our customers

  • Identify and squash bugs

  • Analyze and optimize client-side UI and server-side API code for efficiency and performance

Experience

If this is your first rodeo, don’t throw your hat in the ring just yet.

Requirements:

  • Understanding of modern PHP (3+ years)

  • Understanding of ReactJS and React Native (3+ years)

  • You know how to use source control (Git)

  • Experience with the Laravel Framework or comfortable learning

  • You’ve published apps for both iOS and Android

  • Experience working on, and debugging, location services on a mobile app

  • Familiarity with the entire stack: web servers, the application layer, caching, databases

  • Understanding of UI Design Heuristics and experience of putting them into practice

Really Nice to Have:

  • Mobile development and/or Location Tracking in adverse conditions

  • Experience with Radar.io

  • Mapping/GIS experience

  • Experience with MixPanel

  • Python

  • TDD

  • AWS server management

  • JWT and OAuth Authentication

  • Building RESTful APIs

  • Entrepreneurial spirit

  • An eye for design

Commitment and compensation

We’re looking for somebody to join our core team and to grow with us.

  • This can be Part time or Full time. You’ll help set the direction for the product and execute it.

  • Compensation is negotiable. Please understand that you’ll be joining a young company with gigantic ambitions.

  • Equity Stake. You’ll be joining as our first in-house technical partner and you’ll be compensated with a significant equity stake in the company.

  • This job is 100% remote and we’re flexible AF.

Everybody’s situation is different. If you’re excited about the role but want to discuss some of these details, we encourage you to apply.

We were told what we’re looking for is a “needle-in-the-haystack kind of person.” That’s true and not in a hyperbolic sense.

We’re trying to find somebody in the middle of a very narrow order-four Venn diagram.

> Passionate about solving Wayward’s technical problems, and

> Knows how to ship great code, and

> Loves adventure, travel, and the outdoors, and

> Highly motivated.

We know you’re out there.

You should know you’re joining a highly motivated team that wants to build something for the long haul. We started Lost Corporation in 2018 and have been growing it unwaveringly, even through a Global pandemic. Our core team is comprised of 6 people and we have more than a dozen in our extended team. You should also know that we’re planning to raise some capital in 2022 to support the growth of Wayward.

We can’t wait to meet you!
